Whether you are looking for an unstructured Serious Fun visit or a field trip with a specific lesson in mind, the Discovery Center can meet your needs.

The Kansas Children's Discovery Center is an excellent choice for a field trip venue. We offer several STEAM themed field trips that are tailored for students K-2nd grades or 3rd - 5th grades. All Discovery Center field trips and exhibits meet Kansas Common Core and KCCRSS standards.

The Kansas Children's Discovery Center's education team is made up of an engineer and two seasoned educators with years of experience teaching to various age groups.

Pre-K - 2nd Grade

Inside My Body

This new and improved program will have the students up and running as they explore many organs found in the human body - Lung, Heart, Brain, Kidney. Students will learn how the organs work in their body and what our bodies need in order to stay healthy. They will run a relay race while learning about their kidneys and learn how lungs inflate. Each station will have a hands-on activity illustrating the organ or a game that will also help describe what that organ does.

Kindergarten Science Standards 1.1.1, 3.1.4, 6.1.1
Common Core ELA L.K.1, L.K.5, L.K.6, RF.K.2

NEW! Build, Roll, Engineer!

Students will use different materials to create structures that will send a ball in motion!  While learning how to use the materials in different ways, students will be challenged to observe, build, rebuild and work together to complete their engineering task.  Your students will be problem solving engineers without realizing what they are learning!

Science Standard:  K-PS2-2
Common Core ELA  K-PS2-2
Common Core Math  MP.2, K.MD.A.1, K.MD.A.2

This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, MA-11-15-0041-15.

NEW! Push, Pull, Launch!

What does it take to knock down a tower?  Small push, large pull, or more?  Students will love exploring push and pull forces as they investigate ramps, movement and fun toys that launch in our new program, Push, Pull, Launch!

This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, MA-11-15-0041-15.

Westar Energy Foundation Wacky Weather Science Lab
(K - 2nd)

Why does it rain? What is a cloud? Through guided demonstrations using hot and cold air, water and wind, students will observe the forces that create the weather they see every day, make rain indoors and watch clouds form! Watch severe weather in action as we learn what is needed to create thunderstorms and watch a tornado on a tabletop. As students learn how severe weather forms, they will discuss what to do during a weather emergency.

1st Grade Science Standards 4.2.1, 4.2.2, 4.3.1, 4.3.2, 4.3.3, 5.1.2, 7.1.1

Money Matters
(2nd, 3rd)

Welcome to the Discovery Market! In this program, students will experience the inner workings of a simulated economy while taking on the role of consumer and vendor as they buy and sell goods. Students will learn how to create a budget and the differences between wants vs. needs and goods vs. services. They will also explore how prices are set and understand the role of a wholesaler and competition in the marketplace.

Common Core Math 2.MD, 2.OA, 2.NBT
Common Core ELA SL.2.1

Benchmark 1.4

3rd - 5th Grade

Forensic Techniques Science Lab

The beloved science jewel has gone missing and we staff need your help to find it!  Through hands-on experimentation, students will learn the science behind different forensics techniques used in crime scene analysis.  Students will participate in fingerprinting, simulated blood typing, and powder analysis to help solve the mystery.

KCCRSS: Cross Cutting Concepts: Patterns Science and Engineering: Practices 1, 3, 4, 6, 7

Topics address different disciplinary core Ideas and performance standards.

Seismic Design: Shake, Rattle & Roll!

Learn about the engineering design process and test different variables to understand their importance in building earthquake-resistant structures. Students will be challenged to design and build their own buildings and be given restrictions on time, materials and cost. Structures will be built on a shake table and tested for strength and integrity. This program not only meets, but exceeds the new engineering standard requirements!

Standards: Engineering ETS1-1, ETS1-2, 3-5-ETS1-3.

Special thanks to area educators and Bartlett & West engineers in helping to create this field trip!
