If there is one thing I love doing more than decorating, it’s definitely traveling. I plan to see as much of the world as I can in this lifetime. But sometimes when you’re dreaming about places on the other side of the world, it’s easy to forget that you probably haven’t seen everything there is to see right down the road from you. I love exploring areas close to home just as much as the far away places!

This past weekend we had an opportunity to visit Topeka, KS to commemorate 175 years of the Oregon Trail. The Oregon trail stretches from Independence, MO all the way to Oregon City, Oregon. There are cities all along the way that make for great road trips filled with historic sites and modern attractions.

Topeka is about an hour and half from where we live. It was a short little road trip that I hadn’t really considered taking before. Will was out of town for work, so I made the trip with my mom and my two year old. Guys, I cannot believe the amount of things Topeka has to offer!

For the past nine weeks, Topeka Hy-Vee, The Kansas Children's Discovery Center and Raise Kansas partnered up to help fight food insecurity in Shawnee County. Every Monday, the three companies provided nutritional lunches to families who don't always have food. Mikki Burcher, the marketing director for the Topeka Hy-Vee said it's important for them to give back to the community in any way they can.

Amid the hubbub surrounding downtown Topeka’s revitalization, it’s good to know that attention is still being paid to Gage Park — one of Topeka’s civic mainstays. Just on Tuesday of last week, workers installed a bridge over Westlake, a crucial connection in building an exterior perimeter trail. Back in February, the county commission agreed to pay more than a half million dollars to Conroy Contractors to build the western and northern sections of the trail.
