Exploring the Universe: Filtered Light

Exploring the Universe: Filtered Light @ Kansas Children's Discovery Center

Join us for this illuminating program at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center on Saturday, May 25 at 10:30 and 1:30. Discover how colored filters can help reveal more about an image, then make and study colorful images of your own. Learn how scientists can use telescopes and other tools to capture and filter different energies of light to study the universe. Most objects in the universe are so distant from us that we can only study them through light. Filters allow us to block some energy levels of light and isolate others; each energy of light can offer new information about the object of study. Exploring Earth: Temperature Mapping
May 28 @ 1:30 pm – 2:00 pm
Exploring Earth: Temperature Mapping @ Kansas Children's Discovery Center

Explore the magic of temperature at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center on Tuesday, May 28 at 1:30. This activity models the way Landsat satellites use a thermal infrared sensor to measure land surface temperatures. Infrared technology, like the infrared thermometer in this activity, uses the infrared light emitted by an object to measure its temperature remotely (without having to touch it!) By taking a series of measurements over an area, a scientist can create a visual representation of the surface temperatures (like a weather map for surface temperatures rather than air temperatures.) Program sponsored by the National Informal STEM Education Network. This program is a special preview of Discovery Space, an exhibit full of out-of-this-world fun, opening June 14!

Join us on Sunday, June 2 for the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center’s 5th annual Serious Fun Mud Run! The Mud Run is a 1/4 mile marvelously messy obstacle course designed for kids 4+ and grown-ups to navigate pits, tunnels, waterfalls and other muddy challenges in an untimed race to the finish line!

Why mud? The Discovery Center believes in the importance of outdoor exploration and messy play for people of all ages. The Mud Run lets participants get into the kind of play kids (and former kids) don’t get often enough: the opportunity to touch, grab and roll around in oozy mud!

Mud Run registrations are $27 ($25 for Discovery Center members). Registrations before Friday, May 17 include a Mud Run t-shirt and swag bag. All proceeds from this event support the Discovery Center’s work to remove barriers to play and create rich, diverse museum experiences for every child.

There are several different times to run the course. Kids may run at 10 AM or 11 AM, families run at noon. You will choose a start time when you register.

The Serious Fun Mud Run is sponsored by FHLBank Topeka and Jamie Hornbaker, State Farm Agent.

Be sure to celebrate the end of the summer at the free Discovery Kindergarten Fair on Saturday, July 28 from 1-4 p.m. at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center.

Camp Kindergarten is offered free with generous support from Together Topeka, Security Benefit, the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library and local school districts. Starting school is a milestone in the life of every child, yet in Shawnee County, more than 1,300 children have not had the opportunity for a formal preschool experience. As part of a community-wide goal of having every child ready for school by the age of five, the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center is inviting incoming kindergarteners alongside parents, caregivers and community organizations that support children and their families as they prepare to launch into school at Discovery Kindergarten.
