Please join us at at the Kansas Children's Discovery Center on Saturday, September 5 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. for a Symbolic Monarch Migration Activity!

Monarch Watch, in collaboration with Symbolic Monarch Migration, is hosting an activity booth where kids can color life-size monarch butterflies to send to schools down in Mexico, mimicking the monarch’s spectacular fall migration. Kids will learn about the fall migration that monarchs take every year, create connections with other youth across North America through this symbolic paper butterfly exchange, and learn lessons about the importance of conservation.

In the fall, participating students in Canada and the U.S. send paper butterflies (as well as an ambassador gift) to students in Mexico, just like how the real monarch butterflies head south in the fall during their migration. In the spring, students will receive different paper butterflies, lining up with when the real monarch butterflies head back north for the spring and summer seasons, and a letter from a student in Mexico. The Symbolic Monarch Migration can create new understanding for children about monarchs and their environment and about the value of cooperation and ambassadorship.

Regular admission applies, which is $11 for adults and children, $10 for seniors over 65, and free for infants under 12 months and Discovery Center members. Admission also includes access to more than 30,000 square feet of indoor exhibits and our 4.5-acre certified Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom.
