About Kansas Water
Kansas Water invites visitors to splash, pump, and play at an interactive water table that brings Kansas’s rivers, rain, and reservoirs to life. Visitors will discover how water moves, sustains, and grows our state by building their own locks, dams, drainage systems, ports and tributaries. The water table includes a ball launch, adaptable aqueducts, dam building, water vortex, pipe building, hand pumps, fog mushroom, make-a-fountain, and a hand wheel operated water Bernoulli! This exhibit opened in 2025 as part of the Building Discovery expansion.
Fun Facts
The Kansas River, also known as the Kaw, runs 173 miles from Junction City, flowing eastward through Topeka, Lawrence, and Kansas City before joining the Missouri River. Topeka’s culture, history and development have been significantly influenced by the Kansas River. The river has been a vital water source for the city, supporting municipal, agricultural, and industrial needs. alongside recreational opportunities for Topeka’s residents and visitors.
By exploring this exhibit, children and families develop a deeper understanding of the role of both ground and surface water in their lives and the broader ecosystem, fostering an appreciation for local natural resources and the importance of environmental stewardship. This exhibit both educates and inspires a sense of pride and responsibility towards the Kansas River and the city of Topeka.
