A simple lullaby can become a powerful bridge between parent and child.
In 2025, the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center piloted the Lullaby Project, an initiative of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute that invites parents and caregivers to create personalized lullabies for their children alongside professional artists and music therapists. The program is designed to support parental well being, encourage early childhood development, and strengthen the connection between parent and child.
Ashley and Joey participated in the pilot program, working with music therapist Holly Taylor to write a lullaby for their daughter, Violet. Going in, they did not see themselves as particularly musical, but the opportunity to create something personal for their child drew them in.
“We don’t consider ourselves to be musically inclined, so without the Lullaby Project we wouldn’t have created something so special for her.”
With guidance, they translated their thoughts into lyrics and melody, shaping a song rooted in their experience as new parents. Much of the inspiration came from simply watching Violet grow.
“Having a daughter was a dream for us for a long time. Now that we are parents we love watching her change, grow, and try new things.”
Their lullaby focuses on encouragement and reassurance, reflecting the hopes they carry for her future.
“Our lullaby details our wishes for our daughter to believe in herself, and to always follow her dreams. It lets her know that no matter what we are always here for her.”
That message extends beyond the present moment. They see the lullaby as something Violet can return to as she grows, a reminder of both their love and their support.
“We want her to not be afraid to try new things, and go after her dreams, even when life gives her challenges. We’ll always be waiting in the wings to support her.”
For Ashley and Joey, the experience also highlighted the value of slowing down and creating something lasting together. What began as a new and unfamiliar opportunity became a meaningful keepsake for their family, one that captures a specific moment in their lives as parents.
The Lullaby Project continues to offer families that same opportunity, creating space for reflection, creativity, and connection through music.
