Hospitality Coordinator

The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center in Topeka, Kansas, is looking for two (2) friendly and organized multi-taskers to join our museum team. The Hospitality Coordinators are responsible for supporting an environment that inspires discovery and joy for the thousands of children and former children who visit the museum from all across the world.

The Hospitality Coordinators are responsible for ensuring that every guest, volunteer and visitor feels welcome when visiting the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center. This position is part-time, Wednesday-Saturday and every other Sunday.

Schedule and Compensation: Hospitality Coordinator is part-time, hourly, $16-$19 per hour.

Responsibilities:

  • Answer questions, provide information and support to ensure visitors have an excellent visit.
  • Assist in providing guest service on the gallery floor as needed.
  • Assist in maintaining records and adhere to appropriate records retention requirements.
  • Maintain membership information and transaction records.
  • Assist in processing regular inventory of Discovery Shop items and operational supplies.
  • Work in cooperation with other staff, as well as independently, on special or ongoing projects.
  • Take instruction from supervisor to perform functions as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the museum.
  • Available to work Wednesday - Sunday.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills:

  • Proven customer service skills.
  • Proven administrative skills.
  • Technologically skilled in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace and basic familiarity with or willingness to learn customer retention software and point of sale software.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload.
  • Able to handle multiple responsibilities with multiple deadlines.
  • Experience working with a diverse group of people.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, in working with both internal and external audiences.

Preferred Skills:

  • Cash handling experience.
  • Bilingual.
  • Proven experience in and passion for guest experience and operations.

Position Conditions:

  • Ability to pass a physical examination, background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol screen.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, both indoors and outdoors.

Gallery Assistant

The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center in Topeka, Kansas is looking for Gallery Assistants to help inspire discovery and joy for the thousands of children and former children who visit the museum from all over the world. Gallery Assistant is a wonderful first job for someone looking for a fun, engaging place to learn transferrable skills.

Schedule and Compensation: Gallery Assistant is part-time, hourly, $8.50 per hour.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the open floor gallery, exhibit areas and outdoor adventure area to ensure safe playing, tidy and sanitized areas, sufficient coverage, and a positive visitor experience.
  • Provide excellent customer service and educational moments to all visitors.
  • Support all volunteers in their roles through training, supervision, coaching and recognition.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with Guest Experience Coordinator, Manager of Business and Visitor Services, Director of STEAM Education, and other members of management to ensure proper completion of floor duties and responsibilities and break schedules.
  • Help maintain a safe and educational climate for all visitors at the Discovery Center.
  • Provide input and feedback to staff about visitor services issues as needed.
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures, including but not limited to: cleaning and laundry duties, exhibit procedures, safety protocols, sanitization efforts, and rental/program set up and tear down.
  • Work with staff, volunteers, and parents to facilitate birthday parties.
  • Available to work weekdays, weekends, and some after-hours events.
  • Assist staff and volunteers with special events and programs, including some after-hours events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills:

  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Experience working with a diverse group of people.
  • Able to communicate effectively in person in large group and one-on-one settings.
  • Experience working with the public, older adults, parents, teens, and young children.
  • Ability to work an extensive period of time on feet, including bending over, lifting 25+ pounds.
  • Self-starter with strong work ethic.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working with young children (0-10 years of age) in various settings.
  • Prior knowledge of Discovery Center exhibits, policies/procedures and mission.
  • Bilingual.
