Education Coordinator

The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center in Topeka, Kansas is looking for a dynamic educator who loves asking questions, encourages getting messy, and believes in the power of play! Our Education Coordinator will be responsible for creating and delivering STEAM-based, hands-on learning experiences to children who visit the museum from all over the world, and at learning events throughout the community. Schedule and Compensation: The Education Coordinator is full-time, Tuesday-Saturday with some evenings and weekends. Salary is $36,000- $38,000 with excellent benefits.

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate floor programming for visitors to the museum
  • Facilitate community education programs in a variety of offsite locations
  • Assist in the creation of developmentally appropriate, hands-on learning experiences
  • Assist in the development and implementation of high quality field trip programming
  • Assist in the scheduling and coordination of special events and programs
  • Other duties as assigned

Communications Coordinator

The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center in Topeka, Kansas is looking for a playful, creative Communications Coordinator to join our museum team and tell our story.

Schedule and Compensation: The Communications Coordinator is full time, Monday-Friday with some evenings and weekends. Salary is $36,000 to $38,000 with excellent benefits.

Responsibilities:

  • Generate engaging social media posts, email newsletters, program descriptions, website content and articles to drive visitors, tell the museum’s story, promote play and inspire giving.
  • Maintain online information sources including the Discovery Center website, community calendars, social media accounts, online review sites and directories.
  • Monitor the museum’s online reputation and respond promptly to online feedback.
  • Assist in coordinating and managing onsite media visits and events.
  • Compile informed reports and key performance metrics across marketing channels.
  • Oversee community donation requests.
  • Proofread and fact check materials.
  • Assist the Director of Marketing and Development to create marketing collateral, fundraising resources and exhibit content.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills:

  • Excellent writing skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient in use of Google Workspace and Adobe Creative Suite programs.
  • Curiosity and commitment to lifelong learning.
  • Experience with marketing research.

Gallery Assistant

The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center in Topeka, Kansas is looking for Gallery Assistants to help inspire discovery and joy for the thousands of children and former children who visit the museum from all over the world. Gallery Assistant is a wonderful first job for someone looking for a fun, engaging place to learn transferrable skills.

Schedule and Compensation: Gallery Assistant is part-time, hourly, $8.50 per hour.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the open floor gallery, exhibit areas and outdoor adventure area to ensure safe playing, tidy and sanitized areas, sufficient coverage, and a positive visitor experience.
  • Provide excellent customer service and educational moments to all visitors.
  • Support all volunteers in their roles through training, supervision, coaching and recognition.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with Guest Experience Coordinator, Manager of Business and Visitor Services, Director of STEAM Education, and other members of management to ensure proper completion of floor duties and responsibilities and break schedules.
  • Help maintain a safe and educational climate for all visitors at the Discovery Center.
  • Provide input and feedback to staff about visitor services issues as needed.
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures, including but not limited to: cleaning and laundry duties, exhibit procedures, safety protocols, sanitization efforts, and rental/program set up and tear down.
  • Work with staff, volunteers, and parents to facilitate birthday parties.
  • Available to work weekdays, weekends, and some after-hours events.
  • Assist staff and volunteers with special events and programs, including some after-hours events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills:

  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Experience working with a diverse group of people.
  • Able to communicate effectively in person in large group and one-on-one settings.
  • Experience working with the public, older adults, parents, teens, and young children.
  • Ability to work an extensive period of time on feet, including bending over, lifting 25+ pounds.
  • Self-starter with strong work ethic.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working with young children (0-10 years of age) in various settings.
  • Prior knowledge of Discovery Center exhibits, policies/procedures and mission.
  • Bilingual.
