Westar Energy Powers STEAM Education for Children

Westar Energy Powers STEAM Education for Children

March 8, 2019 - Westar Energy is partnering with the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center to make STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) education accessible to all children.

Travel to a children’s museum or admission costs can be a barrier for many children to high-quality play experiences. With Westar’s support, the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center is taking their mobile museum to ten rural communities across the region in 2019 to present STEAM Adventures powered by Westar Energy. In conjunction with Westar, communities will be selected to receive an admission-free event of educational fun presented by the Discovery Center’s education team.

Westar has also signed on as a sponsor for the annual Evening of Discovery gala at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center. The gala helps fund KCDC Cares programs, which remove financial, medical and other barriers to play for children. KCDC Cares programs include Medical Warriors, which honors medically fragile children or those battling life-limiting illnesses who need private play time, and Museums for All, which increases museum access to underserved and low-income families.

Westar Energy is a major supporter of STEAM education. As a long-term partner of Kansas Children’s Discovery Center, the organization has funded free nights at the museum for local social service organizations, the annual Engineering Expo and KCDC Cares programs.
