Prairie Exploration

Tallgrass prairie once covered 170 million acres of North America. Now, only four percent of this grassland remains, so many children have not had the opportunity to explore this unique environment. The Discovery Center maintains a native prairie grass and wildflower habitat in front of and to the south of our museum. Explore the prairie with our expert prairie manager Vivien Smith on Saturday, October 19 at 1:30 pm at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center.

The prairie is outside the museum grounds, so admission is not required for this activity.

To enter the museum, regular admission applies, which is $7.75 for children and adults, $6.75 for seniors, and free for infants under 12 months and KCDC members. Admission also lets you play all day at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center with over 15,000 square feet of indoor educational exhibits exploring science, careers, art, building and more, plus a 4.5 acre certified Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom.

Make a Success Card for a Kenyan Student

In Kenya, students graduating to middle primary (4th grade) or upper primary (6th grade) levels are expected to pass an end-of-year exam in October. These exams are extremely important in the Kenyan education system and students want to do their best! During October, visitors to the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center will have the opportunity to create success cards to send to students of Subuku Primary School in Egerton Njoro, Kenya. The Discovery Center will mail the cards to wish students well on their upcoming exams.
