Join us for the grand opening of our new Financial Literacy Village at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center on Friday, August 30 with Member’s Only Hour from 9-10 AM and a public opening at 10 AM. The Financial Literacy Village offers new grocery store and bank exhibits designed to promote financial literacy, imagination and play. This experience is made possible with support from the Sunderland Foundation, Bank of America and The Women’s Fund. Special thanks to PDQ Construction and Custom Wood Products.

Regular admission applies, which is $7.75 for children and adults, $6.75 for seniors, and free for infants under 12 months and KCDC members. The Kenyan flag is rich in symbolism, representing the people of Kenya alongside the country’s history, land and values. Make a Kenyan flag out of paper and learn about how flags use symbols to represent different places on Friday, October 18 at 10:30 and 1:30 at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center.

This program is offered as part of Kenya’s Kids, a new cultural exhibit where families can discover what life is like for children in Kenya today, a country both technologically-advanced and filled with longtime traditions. Kenya’s Kids magically transports visitors into the lives of children living in Kenya, bringing the experience to life to encourage children to not just learn about, but also participate in a new culture as they travel through five immersive environments. Join children’s author Jen Cullerton Johnson as she shares her acclaimed book, Seeds of Change: Wangari’s Gift to the World on Saturday, September 21 at 10:30 and 1:30 at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center. This compelling children’s book brings to life the empowering story of Wangari Maathai, the first African woman, and environmentalist, to win a Nobel Peace Prize. This program is generously sponsored by the Kansas African Studies Center at the University of Kansas.

As a young girl in Kenya, Wangari was taught to respect nature. She grew up loving the land, plants, and animals that surrounded her -from the giant mugumo trees her people, the Kikuyu, revered to the tiny tadpoles that swam in the river. Although most Kenyan girls were not educated, Wangari, curious and hardworking, was allowed to go to school. There, her mind sprouted like a seed. She excelled at science and went on to study in the United States. After returning home, Wangari blazed a trail across Kenya, using her knowledge and compassion to promote the rights of her countrywomen and to help save the land, one tree at a time.
