New Year’s Eve celebrations typically are reserved for late at night on Dec. 31, but on Tuesday, the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center got a 12-hour head start. Late in the morning, an excited crowd of more than 200 children, their parents and their grandparents waited anxiously for noon to arrive, when 1,200 multi-colored balloons that were held up by netting would be dropped from the Discovery Center’s ceiling.!

It’s hard to see your kids grow up especially when they’re on their way to kindergarten.

In just a few weeks, moms and dads are going to say a temporary goodbye as their babies head to school.

Sunday, the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center (KCDC), along with the Greater Topeka Partnership held a kindergarten fair to help ease parents worries.

For mom Jessica Cowen, sending her first child, Aaliyah, to school by herself is a nerve-wracking moment.

"The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center in Topeka has been a place for families and kids to learn in fun and different ways, but for some kids, that learning experience isn’t easy to get to.

The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center is making sure no child is left behind, which is why they’ve started programs to help kids who can’t get here easily, like kids whose mothers are incarcerated.

Community and togetherness, one of the most important goals for the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center, as they bring kids and mothers together, specifically moms who are in prison."

The center opened their new exhibit Friday, called Discovery Space, in honor of the moon landing 50 years ago this July.

The exhibit includes a rocket ship designed by Washburn Tech students and a mission control center that's a live-feed between the discovery center and a mission control center at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library."

"A 12-foot-tall steel replica of a rocket ship was Ali Deters’ favorite part of the new summer space exhibit Friday at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center.

Isabella Pischer said her favorite feature was the exhibit’s “mission control center,” where she was able to see and speak with people in a similar center at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library.

Ali and Isabella, both 8-year-old students at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic School, were among participants in Friday morning’s launch of Discovery Space, a summer exhibit designed to get children learning about space exploration."

The Kansas Children's Discovery Center unveiled their new pirate ship Wednesday. The ship is part of the outdoor learning area at the Discovery Center.

The ship has been named 'Seas the Day' after a social media vote. The name was suggested by six-year-old Macy Archer, and her mother, from Carbondale."
