"Local kids set sail on a new adventure at the Kansas Children's Discovery Center Wednesday.
"We had spent some time outside and we noted a need for some really interactive, imaginative play," said Dene Mosier, the Discovery Center's CEO.
The Discovery Center opened their new pirate ship exhibit. The vessel, named 'Seas-The-Day,' was built by the Discover Center Facilities Manager Draque Carver and volunteers."

"The Kansas Children's Discovery Center is lifting people up with a new exhibit.
The new "Lift Yourself" exhibit lets kids see the Discovery Center from new heights.
Kids can learn about pulleys by hoisting themselves up into the air.
It's part of the "Fuel Your Body Through Play" initiative at the Discovery Center."

"The 'Lift Yourself' exhibit opened Friday. It allows kids and adults to use a rope and pulley system to life themselves off the ground, teaching the science of simple machines and the strength of one's body. The CEO of the Discovery Center says they want people to learn in fun ways.
'We know that that's how children and adults alike learn best, is learning through play," Dene Mosier said. "When opportunities come, we really look at exhibits that focus on science, technology, engineering art and math that bring it to life in a hands-on, fun, playful way.'"

"In recognition of the museum’s growth, the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center Board of Trustees promoted Dené Mosier to president and CEO in February. Mosier has served as Executive Director of the nonprofit children’s museum since 2015. ... The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center also announced record attendance in 2018, hosting 88,423 visitors in 2018. Attendance increased 10.28 percent from 2017.The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center is gaining prominence as a regional tourist attraction. Of the museum’s 88,423 visitors in 2018, 30.84 percent lived outside Shawnee County. Over 3,000 visitors came from outside Kansas in 2018, including three foreign countries. One family visited from Australia in 2018. Another family drove 1,800 miles from Eugene, Oregon to see a traveling exhibit at the museum. Since opening in 2011, the museum has hosted over 600,000 visitors from all 50 states and 23 countries. "

"The program is one of a growing number that aim to strengthen ties between American mothers serving time and their children, whose welfare faces grave risks if those family bonds weaken. The need for initiatives like these, as well as for more legal options and social services for mothers facing criminal charges, has surged, advocates say, in step with the explosive growth of the number of people in lockup -- particularly women. ... In Kansas, the Children's Discovery Center launched its Play Free initiative in partnership with the Topeka Correctional Facility, the state's only women's prison. It's modeled on the New York City program. Chicago is considering a similar move."

"The Kansas Children's Discovery Center is giving back to families who have been out of work during the government shutdown. The discovery center is giving free admission to federal government employees until the end of the month. People can bring up to three family members during regular hours. The center said the free days give people a chance to get away from the hardships, and have fun with their families."
