Farai Harreld leading program to help get kids playing outside, learning in nature

A new program with a special guest educator will help get kids playing outside.

Fresh Air Fridays will take place each Friday at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center, with special guest educator Farai Harreld leading instruction on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with Discovery Center educators leading on the other days. Harreld is a post-partum doula, folk herbalist, urban homesteader, writer and caregiver. She was born in Zimbabwe and raised in Botswana before moving to Kansas. She is an educator on topics ranging from plants, motherhood, food, race, fashion, gardening and more and runs Faraiharreld.com.

The programs will take place rain or shine, as outdoor play is an essential part of a child’s day. Open spaces give the freedom to run, leap, explore, take risks and make memories. Play will be guided, and there will be different themes each month.

There is no additional cost to attend other than regular admission, which is $9 for children and adults, $8 for seniors and free for infants under 12 months and Discovery Center members. Admission also lets you play all day at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center.

According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children, outdoor play is vital to children’s growth for a number of reasons. It invites children to learn science through exploration, creates opportunities for social interaction and collaboration and also promotes physical health through exercise while helping to build motor skills. Additionally, outdoor play promotes better sleep, gives children a chance to take appropriate risks and leads to better learning outcomes once children return to other activities. Perhaps most importantly, it anchors children to the real world.

Playing in the elements is also an important part of the program, as weather is an important part of growing as a child. For instance, playing in the rain or snow helps with a child’s motor skills and balance and exposes them to different sensory experiences.

Other benefits of outdoor play include getting plenty of Vitamin D through sunlight to help stabilize a child’s mood and boost their immune system and giving them an appreciation of nature that they might not have otherwise gained being inside.

The Discovery Center has an abundance of opportunities for children to learn and play outside with several outdoor design features, including a 4.5-acre certified Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom and a native prairie grass and wildflower habitat. The Discovery Center also has installed several outdoor play spaces at parks and community centers across Topeka, as well as one in Marysville, Kan., that features design elements inspired by the city’s history.

For those looking for more ways to get their kids outdoors instead of sitting in front of a screen all day, another great resource is 1000 Hours Outside, a global movement to get kids playing out in nature for at least 1,000 hours of outside activity a year. The website offers free, downloadable tracker sheets to keep a record of how many hours kids are outside each day, as well as a free pack of outdoor activity prompts for each month of the year to help motivate you to get outside with fun activities. There is also an official 1000 Hours Outside app for both Apple or Android products, as well as other merchandise to help aid in outdoor activities.

The Discovery Center’s gift shop also offers merchandise that can help promote outside play, including butterfly nets, penguin and polar bear ear muffs, water bottles and other outdoor-related items.

The Mud Run is...

A 1/4 mile marvelously messy obstacle course designed for kids 4+ and adults to navigate pits, tunnels, waterfalls and other muddy challenges in an untimed race to the finish line! This year's Mud Run will be Sunday, June 2.

Why Mud?

The Discovery Center believes in the importance of outdoor exploration and messy play for people of all ages. The Mud Run lets participants get into the kind of play kids (and former kids) don't get often enough: the opportunity to touch, grab and roll around in oozy mud!

Mud Run registration...

Mud Run registrations are $27 ($25 for KCDC members). Registrations before May 17 include a Mud Run t-shirt and swag bag. All proceeds from this event support the our work to create rich, diverse museum experiences for every child.

Mud Run FAQs

I’ve never run a mud run, what can I expect?

Expect to get muddy! The obstacles include a sprinkler waterfall, climbing, tunnels/pits to crawl through, mud pies on your head and of course—mud pits! While we encourage you to try each obstacle, if it is more fun for you to skip it, we won’t tell. Our course is tough, but we’re all about the fun!

How old do runners have to be? Can I run with my child?

The Mud Run is for runners 4 years old and up. One adult is required to run (mud-free) alongside children ages 4-6 at no additional charge. If adults would like to participate and get messy right along with their children, they can register for the family mud run!

When will it start? When is packet pickup?

There are several different times to run the course. Kids may run at 10 AM or 11 AM, families run at noon. You will choose a start time when you register. There is no need to pick up anything prior to the event this year. Pick up your race packet upon arrival for your scheduled race on race day at the registration table. Registration opens 15 minutes before your scheduled race time.

What if it rains?

Great, more mud! However, if there is lightning, thunder or high winds we may cancel. In the event of cancellation for any reason, there will be no refund of the registration fee.

What should I wear?

Whatever you would like! We recommend lace up sneakers, clothes or a costume that can get extremely messy and muddy and pulled-back hair.

Will you have a way for us to rinse off?

We will have hoses manned by staff to help rinse off muddy runners, but only if you want to! The Discovery Center will be closed and no guests will be allowed inside. We recommend you bring a towel to dry off, a change of shoes and socks and a plastic bag to hold the dirty muddy things.

Will photos be taken?

Yes, lots! So put your race number on the front of your shirt or costume. All images of runners become the sole property of KCDC. KCDC has the right to use images for promotion.

Are there prizes?

Every participant who registers before May 17 gets a swag bag, t-shirt and unforgettable experience. The course is not timed and there are no awards or prizes for winners.

Can I volunteer?

Sure! We appreciate the help and will need many people. Volunteers must contact us prior to the event. Contact the Discovery Center at volunteers@kansasdiscovery.org or 785.783.8300.

In the News: Topeka Metro bus drivers teach kids about public transportation the fun way

Natalie Dattilio, WIBW
December 14, 2018

"Local kids are learning important lessons about public transportation from Topeka Metro bus drivers themselves! The Children's Discovery Center Thursday invited bus drivers to read to children as part of "The Pigeon Comes to Topeka: A Mo Willems Exhibit." They read "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus," written by Mo Willems, who the exhibit is inspired by.”

50,000 nails, 10,000 wood blocks, 6,000 screws

A rocket ship. A funny face. A race car. An alien from outer space.

When we hand children a block of wood and a few basic building supplies here at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center, their imaginations go to work. It’s amazing how much a child can envision. We know when a child imagines creating something new out of supplies in front of them, it’s more than fun. Building teaches kids symbolic thinking, problem solving and creativity.

Do you really give small children hammers?

Yes! Children with appropriate adult supervision can absolutely hammer a nail. Taking small risks is an important part of childhood and helps kids grow healthy bodies and minds. Our real build exhibit gives children the chance to try something new. It’s a favorite of children who visit.

But we need your help. Giving children this experience requires 50,000 Nails, 10,000 wood blocks, 6,000 screws and 77 drill bits every year.

This year for giving Tuesday, we need you to support this experience for kids. Our goal is to raise $2,500 for building supplies to be used in 2019. Your support helps us provide rich, diverse play experiences like Build to every child in our community.

  • Your $10 gift provides 1,000 nails to build new ideas
  • Your $25 gift provides 25,000 nails to build imagination
  • Your $50 gift provides 1,660 screws to build scientists
  • Your $100 gift provides 16 wood blocks to build wonder
  • Your $500 gift provides 388 drill bits to build dreams
